A good start

This weekend I did something I’ve not done in a very long time… I went to the movies. I’ve not been to the movies in a long time. I think the last thing I saw in the theater was the Transformers. There just has not been much that has made me want to spend the price for me and the hubby to go to the movies, which in my area is 20 USD.

However this month there are quite a few movies I’m ready to plunk my money down for. In fact there is almost one every weekend and this weekend started it all off with the premiere of “Iron Man“.

If this movie is any indication of what the summer movie season holds… I’m very very excited. Iron Man was a killer movie. The story was great, not over done, not too much left out, Robert Downey Jr was perfect as Tony Stark and I even enjoyed Gwyneth Paltrow. The special effects were believable and well done and the whole thing moved smoothly. It was brilliant. I highly recommend it.

I know I’ve not rated a movie in a while but seeing as this might be the start of a good… 5 out of 5
stars. Go see it.

Superman Returns

This weekend we also caught Superman Returns. The movie was very good with a very nice twist that I wasn’t expecting. It should be noted that this movie is said to take place AFTER Superman 2 and that the disasters that were 3 and 4 never happened.

Brandon Roush was good as Superman (I however did not get all tingly or excited about him in his tights) but he really, really nailed Clark Kent. I really enjoyed the way he did the clueless acting with the knowing look in his eye. The casting was fantastic (I seem to really care about these days huh?) Kate Bosworth did a great modern day Lois Lane, and Kevin Spacey was EXTRAORDINARY as Lex Luthor. Parker Posey was a nice addition as well.

The story moved quickly and was a bit predictable but it was nice to see Superman finally fly smoothly and without it looking too fake. One thing I will drop which won’t ruin the movie is… I love how Bryan Singer made the opening and closing exactly like Superman and Superman 2, it did a great job of tying it all together.

Go check it out… 4 out of 5 stars from me :)

The Devil Wears Prada

As mentioned in my previous post, we caught The Devil Wears Prada on Friday and I for one loved it. I can not wait to see it again. I’m actually a little surprised that I want to see it again. To me that’s really the sign of a great movie, the last movie I wanted to see again right after I saw it was V For Vendetta.

I was blown away by Meryl Streep’s performance as Miranda Priestly, she was cold and bitchy to a whole new level. I enjoyed Anne Hathaway’s performance as Andy Sachs, I was relieved to see her again in a good movie WITHOUT showing her tits a la Brokeback Mountain but I was even more pleased with Stanley Tucci’s performance as Nigel, he was great and I loved every minute of him on screen.

This is another one of those movies where if you are “thinking” of seeing it, stop thinking and start moving your feet to your local theater and see it bitches!

5 out of 5 stars from me :)

Cars

We went to see the new Pixar movie Cars this weekend. I know I’m a week past due but I was busy last weekend!

Let me say this… it’s AMAZING. Pure Pixar magic. It was a great story, and the animation was unbelievable. I realize, it’s the details that make the difference. The rocks that bounced around on the track as the cars went by, the reverse sound the Porsche made when she backed up, and my favorite the scene where the bugs were flying into the fluorescent lights and when they zoomed in, the bugs were VW Bugs with wings!!!

The movie is very clever and as always a well developed story/character set. I also liked how there was no “REAL” product endorsements in the movie, all of the sponsors were fake, but they did sneak in something very cute. I noticed it, but a few friends I spoke with didn’t. During the Piston Cup scene there was ONE car with a real sponsor…

That’s right that’s the number 84 car sponsored by Apple. I thought it was well done from the white car (a la iMac) to the number 84 (1984).

I really recommend this movie…go see Cars.

V for Freakin’ Awesome

“Remember, remember the fifth of November,
gunpowder, treason and plot,
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
should ever be forgot.”

This weekend, I headed out to take in the much anticipated (in my mind) V for Vendetta, a new movie by the Wachowski Brothers. It’s based off the comic series/graphic novel written by Alan Moore. I wanted to see this movie but I did not know much about it. I can sum up how I felt about the movie very simply. It’s the best movie I’ve seen in a long time.

It had no slow parts, I was completely immersed in the story and the beauty of the film. As the story unfolded, it only got better. The story was very relevant to the world we live in, although it was obvious the point was lost on the group of teens behind us.

Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith of the Matrix) nailed the complexity and depth that V needed. Natalie Portman aside from being BEAUTIFUL as a bald woman was great as the deeply troubled Evey.

Go see this movie. It rocked.

“Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. There is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof…”

King Kong

Wow. That’s about all I can say. For a movie that I didn’t want to see at first, I got sucked into the hype, and was amazed at how good it was. The movie itself is amazing. It’s almost 3 hours long but it sure didn’t feel that way. It was a bit slow at the beginning but it picked up and carried you right thru to the end.

However, my movie was almost ruined by the people who sat next to us. The woman who older, perhaps granny aged and her most likely grandson, sat in the movie and spoke in full volume like they were watching a DVD at home. I mean what the f*ck! He did not want to be there and every 15 minutes had to give her a time update, “…it’s 6:30 when is this thing gonna be over?” he said at one point.

Now it gets worse, she was so stereotypical. She pointed out EVERY obvious thing in the movie and missed all the subtlety. It was awful. She laughed when people died, she cheered “STAMPEDE” over and over again when the brontosaurus were in fact stampeding. I had half a mind to tell her to “shut da f*ck up!” but I knew, as did the boyfriend that this would have only served to give her more reason to talk. I thought of moving but the theater was packed and I did not want to miss what was going on to find another seat. It was awful.

It was a testament to how good the movie was, that she did NOT ruin my good time completely. I highly recommend this movie! Go for see it!

brokeback broke my back

but two steps forward one step back… i was feeling better (see last post) before the movie but during the movie… i realized, i forgot my motrin, my fever reducer and slowly but surely thru this excellent movie… i got the chills… and a fever again. so dumb. i’m so pissed. how silly of me.

we came home and i took my meds and i am feeling better (again better not great) and i’m about to head to bed. but before i do. i wanted to talk about brokeback mountain. what an amazing movie. i was on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. tho i did not break down and cry (surprising considering i cry at long distance commercials), i was totally immersed in it and loved every second. the story was wonderful the cinematography great and the ending just spectacular. you must go see it. it’s an amazing indie movie and worth a watch at full price!

okay now i’m gonna go die in bed.

Fantastic Four

We saw the Fantastic Four today with my Dad. The movie was very very good. I really enjoyed the story and the casting was almost perfect. I was hooked from the moment it started and did not stop until it was over.

The guy who played Johnny Storm aka the Torch was great. He really pulled off the cockiness and was half naked and 100% sexy the whole movie.

Of course the ever sexy Juilian McMahon was awesome as Dr. Doom. It was better than I had hoped.

Go see this one…

War of the Worlds

This evening, Shawn and I saw War of the Worlds. The movie stars Tom Cruise, who I often flip before liking and not liking. He was good in the movie, but the movie itself was AMAZING. I loved it. It moved amazingly fast and totally immersed you and kept you completely involved, I even jumped in my seat in one part. The special effects were very good and I loved the Martians. They were really very cool.

I would definitely recommend going to see this movie at the theater, pay full price if you have to!

Batman Begins

OK, still trying to get caught up, I forgot to post about Batman Begins.

Batman Begins was amazingly good. I was really happy with it. I was a bit unsure at first with the whole League of Shadows thing, but it worked well. The movie moved very quickly and I hardly noticed it was an almost 2.5 hour movie. Everyone was very good in the movie including Katie Holmes, who some people have said was bad in the movie. Christian Bale was almost perfect as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Michael Caine did a great job as Alfred. He really pulled off a few good one liners. I however throughly enjoyed Gary Oldman as James Gordon. He really nailed what I felt Gordon should have been like and I liked the glimpse of him at home with what must have been Barbara as a toddler.

It’s been said to death but it was neat how they tried to explain all of his gadgets and why they came to exist. I also liked the look of Gotham and Arkham. The Scarecrow was really creepy and the effects were sweet. It left me satisfied the way the first Tim Burton Batman movie did. I am not comparing them, just saying that it was a good Batman flick, and they are hard to come by these days.

Definitely spend the cash to see this one in the theater.
