iPhoto bloat

I think maybe I have too many pictures in my iPhoto. I think back to my parent’s photo albums and how sparse the photos were. They were mostly centered around Christmas, Easter and birthdays. However in the digital age, I take photos by the truck load. My parents had lots of blurry pictures and with only 12-24 exposures per roll, and no way to see the photo til it was printed… that was life. Now we can see instantly the photo wasn’t so great and take another right away, leading to lots of copies of the same basic photo.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who doesn’t do a good job of cleaning up my photos after I import them into iPhoto. My library is out of control with 7400 photos, it’s almost 14GB! I don’t know what to do. I’ve gone thru and tried to clear out all the photos that were almost identical, and the ones that were out of focus over the last year but how in the world am I to get this under control? When do you decide you no longer need this photo or that? How do you slim down an out of control library?

Any one else have this problem? Anyone have some suggestions?

Wow look at all the comments!

Hey there Peter, what I can suggest to you is to put all of your pics on cds and keep a album that way. Then you will be able to free up your space on your computer. Let me know what you think.

Darell, that’s a great idea however as I have 14 GB of photos, that’d be about it would take about 22 CDs.. or even almost 4 DVDs. Tho I could archive some old photos, but then if I’m gonna archive them, will i recall them, and if I can’t recall them, do I even need them? :)

Go on... say something. You know you want to.
