Leopard!

Last nite I picked up a family pack of Leopard. I upgraded my machine around 1am this morning and my mom’s just a few minutes ago. At first glance I like it. What I’m impressed with is how much quicker it feels on both my MacBook and my Mom’s iBook G4.

More to come…

Getting back to it

I know I only blogged once last week, and what I find strange is, I was in a hotel room, in the middle of no where, with no hope of going anywhere or doing anything and you’d think that I’d have had plenty of time to blog, do stuff on my computer, get the photo pages done, etc. But in fact, I did NOTHING on my to do list. I didn’t get back to the hotel most evenings until WELL after 7pm and once I was there, I kinda relaxed after the 12 hour day I put in and just surfed, talked to the people in my life who keep me from going completely insane when I’m away from home for a week! You know who you are (both of you) and I want to say thanks for that.

The drive back on Friday was much better than it could have been, especially because I did not have to find a tire on Friday, because someone took care of that for me on Wednesday. I took US219 back and boy was that a twisty road! Back and forth, tight switchbacks, it made me long for a manual transmission in my car. It took much longer on the way back because I had to stop more. I don’t know why but I kept getting almost in a trance while driving. All it took was a few moments of focusing on something else on the side of the road and I was right as rain.

The weekend was not bad, but more of the same. The best laid plans of a macboyx always seem to go astray. Tons of TiVo to watch (I’m in complete agreement with Pinoyboy [link]), Saturday evening spent helping a friend with his Mac (solving a problem feels good tho), and yesterday, well let’s just say lots of productivity squandered.

Ordinarilly I’d be worried about it but with all that went on last week, and what’s going to be going on this week, I think I’ll chalk it up to getting back to it.

Oh what a night…

Tonight was… well… interesting?

The day was a mixed bag. I had a great morning, go to customer site on time, had a decent morning, complete with getting signal at the customer site, when yesterday I had none, followed by a bumpy but satisfying afternoon of work, and an agonizing delay of my return to my hotel room.

After class was over, I got pulled into a meeting that really I had no reason to be at. The room had no signal and I sat there whilst the rest of the folks worked and discussed items that didn’t pertain to me. Eventually, we headed to dinner, which was surprisingly good meal at a place that was formerly the mini mart of a gas station. While we were in the restaurant, it poured miserably and got all the more humid. I began my drive home at almost 8pm. The trip was going well until I apparently hit a rock in the road and blew out my front passenger tire. The road was a two lane highway with a soft sloping shoulder and as I pulled over, I realized that there was NO way I could safely jack the car on the soft, wet shoulder and so I called Roadside Assistance. Thank goodness I wasn’t a half mile up the road, or I wouldn’t have had a signal on my phone.

Roadside Assistance called me back and told me that someone would be by within an hour. I was nervous but settled back in and began to wait. Thank goodness for Shawn and Pinoyboy. Shawn calmed me down and Pinoyboy chatted me up while I waited. Things seemed to be on the right track until the recovery company called to say that their truck was broken down and they could not come. Yes that’s right… they could not come. I waited another 15 min or so for Roadside Assistance to call me back and they didn’t. I called them and found out that the recovery company had not bothered to call Roadside Assistance to tell them they weren’t coming! Roadside Assistance set about finding another company to come, only to call and tell me that there were NO OTHER companies they worked with in this area and I’d have to wait about 3 hours for them to come! THREE HOURS? I was on a dark, creepy, road in the middle of no where West Virginia!

Just then a State Trooper stopped by and asked me if I needed help. I explained the problem and was almost embarrassed when I explained that I didn’t think it was safe to change the tire, he agreed, which made me feel better. He called someone to help and thank goodness within 20 minutes there was someone there with a huge floor jack and got my “donut” on in no time flat and I was on my way!

Now, I just have to get a real tire on before I head home.

EVDO all the way!

I had posted last week my latest want [link] list, and yesterday I got something that I’ll be crossing off the list… my EVDO Rev A Modem. Thanks to Pinoyboy’s help, I decided to go with the Novatel Ovation USB727 USB EVDO [link] modem. I chose Sprint’s service and I have to say this thing is AMAZING. I get about 1Mb down and about 500kb upstream with it. It was sickly easy to set up on my MacBook, not so much on my PC.

I am really happy with it. As a matter of fact I’m in the car, blogging on it, and I can’t tell a difference over being on my home network! This is amazing!!! Wow think of all the productive time I’ll have now. Hahhahaha, yeah right!

[UPDATE] fixed 1 MB to 1Mb and 500MB to 500kb

Amazon MP3 downloads… not want

I started this post on Sunday but I am only now getting a chance to finish it…

I know the whole world is excited about Amazon’s new MP3 download service and that I’m going to be in the minority expressing my displeasure about it but I feel I have to share my feelings, after all this is my blog :).

Now let’s be fair, I’m hardly a big buyer of music in any form at this point. Those days seem to be behind me, that’s not to say I don’t love music, I do. It’s also not to say that I don’t have a lot of music, I do. It’s also not to say that I don’t listen to music often, I do, I just seem to have MOST of the music I want already.

I’ll admit, I took the bait… MP3s with NO DRM vs AAC with Fairplay, $0.89 vs $0.99… it all seemed so good until I went to download the song. I bought two songs, singles, not from the same album and although everyone has told me there was no Amazon downloader needed for a single, it does not seem to be the case on the Mac.

To be truthful, tho i had problems with the downloader, it was hardly the most disappointing part of my experience. I bought a song, I won’t say which song or what artist, but it was a song I knew and I knew I wanted, so there was no need to preview it. However while buying that song, Pinoyboy recommended another song by the artist. I did a search on Amazon and found the song. I clicked the preview button and nothing happened :( I was quite disappointed, but since it was a song recommended by a trusted source, I bought it. The songs downloaded, they did not add to iTunes… I had to do that manually, but the real disappointment came when I tried to listen to the song. Sure it was the song, but it was an instrumental piano version. Amazon had in no way labeled the song as such, so I headed over to iTunes and sure enuff the song was marked as clear as day as a instrumental piano only version. They also had several versions of the song not just one. I was disappointed in Amazon and bought the song from iTunes.

They needs some more work!

Four

Today is the fourth anniversary of my blog. I know, I know I can’t believe it either. One sad thing I’ve found is that over the last year… I’ve blogged less and less. As time goes on, I start to write posts, and then I never get back to finish them. It seems like the blog always gets to be the last thing I do. I hope to make some changes to that this year.

On this momentous occasion (ha ha!) I do want to take a moment and thank you… my readers for reading this blog. For coming back over and over again, for commenting and making it all worth while.

Thanks!
