I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that Apple released the iPhone 1.1.1 update and that it has caused a bit of trouble for us iPhone users. I’m not sure if I want to upgrade or not. I’m not really all that worried about the locking/unlocking issue as I’ve not unlocked my phone but I am kinda of upset about the third party apps being broken. I really haven’t added too much in the way of third party apps but there are a few that I can’t see using my iPhone without… Ringtones Reorganization Taskbar Notifier But that’s not to say there aren’t some features I want in the update either. I really want:
The truth of the matter is I’m not sure just what I’m going to do… upgrade or not?

As you no doubt have noticed from my past posts, I am a creature of wants and even thought I just got an iPhone, I still want plenty… here is a short list:
Ever since the first day I’ve gotten my iPhone, I’ve been looking for a case. Just as with my iPods, I’m very worried about scratches, nicks and any sort of damage that could happen to my beloved toy. At first there really weren’t many offerings. I started with the Belkin Acrylic Case, which several other people I know swear by. It was a hard acrylic case but mine… simply did not fit. My iPhone slid around inside of it. I took it back the next day. Next, I tried the Incase “Protective Cover for iPhone”. My feelings on this case were mixed. It had no protection for the front of the iPhone. It was just a rubber sleeve that covered the back. The rubber was rugged and sticky and it made sliding your iPhone in your pocket not so easy. After two weeks of use, I noticed some dirt around the dock connector and took the case off to find a LARGE amount of dust and debris in the case. This dirt was also around the edges of the front of the sleeve and both the chrome ring around the screen and the back were getting damaged. I cleaned it all up and put the case back on. Determined to check it every few days to make sure nothing else happened. That was a good plan but after having taken the case off, it was never the right shape to stay on snugly again. I decided to suck up the price of that case (30 USD) and look for a new case. I found a case called the iSee by Contour Design. Contour is the maker of one of my favorite iPod cases, the Showcase. It was then I thought of how much I’d like a Showcase for my iPhone! The Showcase is a clear acrylic case front and back with a rubber ring around the outside and a quick release latch to let you get your iPod out. This I decided would be a perfect case. I looked all over the ‘net and even found some “reviews” of the case but I could not find it. I knew I saw it advertised on the Apple site, but it was gone. I went to Contour’s website, where they listed the Showcase as a product coming soon but an email to them gave me little hope as to an exact date for release. Desperate for a case, I picked up the iSee. Over all I really liked the iSee. It fit better than the Belkin case, and after the stickiness of the Incase, it slid in and out of my pocket better, however it still didn’t fit perfect and my iPhone would slide around in it, tho it was slight, it was too much. Exactly one week after I bought the iSee, Contour announced the release of the Showcase for iPhone. I was very excited and the next chance I got I headed back to the Apple Store and returned the iSee for the Showcase. The Showcase is exactly the case I wanted. It’s very slim, adds almost nothing to the size, shape and weight of the iPhone. It’s clear acrylic on the front and the back and a very smooth but durable rubber around the outside. My only complaint is that it’s not as easy to get the iPhone out as it was to get an iPod out of a Showcase for iPod but it did exactly what I wanted. I also picked up the Power Support Crystal Film which is a static cling protective cover for the iPhone. It’s cut exactly for the iPhone and covers it from top to bottom with cutouts for the home button and the ear piece. I could not be happier, as my iPhone is finally protected! Oy 8 days since a post. I don’t know what’s more pathetic that I’ve not posted in almost two weeks or that I have 3 posts in draft. I…am…lame. I must say that I’m quite impressed with how Apple handled the $100 store credit to iPhone early adopters, not so much how they refunded 100 dollars to the early adopters but how EASY getting the credit was. The process took less than 3 minutes. First, navigate to the following link http://www.apple.com/iphone/storecredit/ and click “Get Started”. Second, enter your phone number and iPhone serial number and click submit. Apple will send an SMS to your iPhone. Enter this number on the site, and that’s it… your credit is on the screen for your to print out and take to the Apple store or to use online at the Apple Store. It could not have been easier. Now… what to spend it on? I’ve got my eye on a few things This past weekend, we took my little sister to the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, to see Wicked. She was really surprised by the gift and throughly enjoyed the show. This was my second time seeing the show and also my first time seeing any Broadway show for a second time. It was a mixed bag. I thought they handled the smaller stage well, but two of the characters (including one of the major roles) were cast poorly. Neither Elphaba nor Fiyero sang their parts well, however the woman who played Glinda really nailed her part and really put her own “spin” on the role. All in all, I liked it, and so did my sister Today on Apple’s website, Steve Jobs wrote an open letter promising iPhone early adopters a $100 Apple Store credit because of the unrest that the $200 dollar iPhone price drop caused… http://www.apple.com/hotnews/openiphoneletter/ I think this is good form. Way to go Apple. Wow, what a slew of iPod related announcements today! The new nano is cute and fat and the iPod classic is nice and has very large disk drives but I’m not so happy with the touch. I feel it looks a little bit to much like the iPhone. I kind of wish the iPhone still looked more unique. I don’t really consider the iPhone to be an iPod but it feels as if Apple does. I think that Apple made some good and bad moves today, I think keeping the “classic” was a good move, but the price cut on the iPhone is a different story. I of course am disappointed, but part of me thinks that’s the price you pay for early adoption, but part of me thinks that this was too big a cut too soon and this is going to tick off a lot of iPhone users especially non-Apple people. I think they are going to have a big backlash on their hands. All in all I like all the products but no one of them is jumping out to me as a “must have”. I like the nano but I don’t need video on my nano and I already have one. I like the classic but I have a 60GB 5th Gen iPod that isn’t full. And then of course I have my beloved iPhone… so why get a touch? I’m actually kind of sad though. I like them all and I want to buy something, I just don’t need to! I was just getting ready to write a post about the new iPods when I noticed that these two pictures are too similar not to mention it! ![]()
How did this happen? I just want to plug an app, iFuntastic. I am loving this program! It’s a program to be used to customize your iPhone. With it I can add custom ringtones, custom notification sounds and even rearrange my home page (which I have!). I moved my icons around since I seem to keep hitting the iPod icon (lower right) with my meaty palms when i try to reach for the SMS (upper right). So I moved it all around and even was able to put SMS in the bottom bar next to the Phone app, where I think it belongs. I do wish Apple would let you do that without a third party app. This release also makes mucking with your iPhone easier by allowing you open the iPhone up to hacking once and not each time you want to change something. If you have an iPhone… check it out, they state you hack your phone at ur own risk but so far it’s been good to me! |
