Scrabble

This past weekend, I rediscovered how much I enjoy the game of Scrabble. I am not particularly good at the game, and to be honest, I’ve not really found anyone who wants to play the game with me. That was until this weekend.

I discovered that Pinoyboy also likes the Scrabble and furthermore, we both have an older Windows(R) copy of the game, and guess what? You can play together over the Internet! We set out to have a meetings of the minds over the Scrabble board, but as with most things, it was not that simple.

Two evenings later, Pinoyboy finally sorted out all the ports and glitches in DirectX and we were able to play. I don’t understand HOW he just figures it all out. I am truly in awe of him!

We played 3 games of Scrabble, which took us until the WEEEEE hours of the morning to complete. He came up with some amazing words and he’s much better than I since he actually looks for the Triple Word Scores etc. I really enjoyed the game and I can’t wait to do it again.

This one DEFINITELY goes into the “cut me some slack, i am a geek you know!” category.

Locked in a room

In my line of work, I am asked to work in some strangely repurposed spaces. For example, the space I’m in would be a perfect place to store irradiated peaches well in to the next millennium. Mind you, I have no problem with it, I understand how space is limited and that you’ve got to make use of it. but today, it gets in my way a bit, you see due to the original purpose of this room the room as is entire floor is… encased in lead.

My mobile is dead, their wireless network doesn’t reach here, Superman couldn’t even spy on me. I’m cut off. And worse, the door will lock behind me if I attempt to leave. I feel cut off completely.

So you might wonder… how did I get this post up? The world may never know… after all a real gomo never tells ALL his secrets…

Back on the road.

Well I’m off to Indiana for work this week. I’m surprised how relaxed I
am. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still panicking a bit, but surprisingly
calm.

I sat down in the terminal and was eating some pretzels and a Diet Coke
when a woman approached me, she said “You look like you know about
computers, can you take a look at mine? What? How does someone “look”
like they know about computers? Perhaps *if* I had one on my lap… or
a book about them? But pretzels and a Diet Coke?

I looked at the Dell notebook she had in her hand and said to her…
“Sorry… I am a Mac user.” Disappointed she walked away… that’s it…
I’m not drinking Diet Coke anymore.

Despair

In my quest to blog more…

I love this site:

Despair Inc.

It makes me laugh, I’ve enjoyed the demotivators, but to day, care of Gizmodo, I saw the Pessimist Mug. Classic. Hilarious. I want one.

Why me…

I swear I have a technology black cloud over my house. I’ve been having issues off and on with my home network for MONTHS. It has to be more then half a year since my trouble started and this week… it got worse.

My setup is not an simple one, but it’s also not a complex one. I had a linksys setup, a cable modem, a wireless router, a VoIP box, a switch and an AirPort express. I suspected the Wireless Router, which was old as dirt, was going bad so I replaced it with a Belkin wireless router, which then lead me to think maybe the cable modem was bad too, so I replaced that as well. Things seemed okay but I’d lose my connection to the Belkin router often. I was frustrated to say the least.

We recently acquired a Slingbox as well, which requires an Ethernet cable connection, so I grabbed another Belkin Wireless router and bridged them together. And that’s when the trouble just doubled. The bridge would go down often and then finally, the other day, one of the Belkin routers, just lost it’s power. It won’t stay on. It’s dead.

I hooked up all of the old Linksys stuff (I’m such a pack rat) and that’s when the latest drama began. For some reason I could NOT get the VoIP box to work behind the old Linksys router. So I put it in front of it and then… the internet would go out every 20-30 minutes. Sigh.

Last night was spent on the phone with Pinoyboy, troubleshooting, testing and triaging my network. The final decision? New router, again.

So far so good. Next… the wireless bridge for the Slingbox. Wish me luck boys and girls!

Just how blue was I?

I don’t think I realized just how blue my hair was at They Might Be Giants concert. Pinoyboy snapped this picture and posted it to the podcast site and I didn’t even notice it until yesterday. It’s such a great shot of how blue it was that I had to post it here.

I was blue wasn’t I?

Pittsburgh May 2007: Day Two: Fallingwater

After the TMBG Show, we did a video podcast for our 200th episode on Oh My Pod! and washed the gel out of our hair. That was a trip. BLUE everywhere in the shower!

Thursday, we had big plans. We had planned to see Fallingwater. Fallingwater is a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright. It sits on top of a waterfall. I’ve always wanted to see it and while we were in the area… it seemed a great idea.

It was about an hour away from the hotel and it was a fun drive. The house itself was amazing. It is both small and large at the same time. Pinoyboy had mentioned to me that Wright had a habit of designing small spaces that opened into bigger spaces and falling water is just that. Hallways are small, but open to large living spaces, the ceilings are low to draw your eye to the expansive open spaces of the surrounding woods.

We took the last tour of the day, a decision that was one the best of the trip. Our tour of the house was just us and one stranger. That was great because we got much more time to look around and the tour was much more personal. We had such a great time.

Pittsburgh May 2007: They Might Be Giants

I think I’ve mentioned here before just how much I like the band They Might Be Giants, and the main focus of this trip to Pittsburgh with Pinoyboy was to see TMBG play.

After our trip to the Apple Stores, we went back to the hotel for a disco nap and to get dressed. Of course the disco nap never happened but we did have a good time getting ready to head out. While we were at the ComicCon NYC we saw a guy at a booth with blue hair. I quipped that I would so love to have blue hair, and lucky for me, Pinoyboy brought with him some blue hair gel. Being the good friend he is, he was not going to let me go it alone… he brought green gel for himself.

Putting the gel on was a laugh riot… we both put the gel on as we’d normally put on gel, only problem with that was that it did not show enough color. We had to LAYER it on THICK. And it was STICKY. By the time the stuff dried every breeze, every movement of my face hurt my scalp! But we looked GOOD :) The bathroom was a mess, blue and green on everything but… WE LOOKED GOOD!

Next we headed out to the show. We grabbed my GPS and jumped into Maestro Car and headed down the impossibly steep hill to Millvale and Mr. Small’s Funhouse, which was a church that they converted into a club. It was wayyyy up on a hill and parking was just basically on the street. We got into the club and while we were waiting for TMBG to come on, there was lots of tracks being played, and they were kinda not what you’d expect at a TMBG show… and it went on and on and on and we were just waiting for the show to start when we realized that the music was the opening act. A DJ (who sucked) was playing the music. Lame. An hour after he went off (2 hours since we walked in) TMBG came on stage.

The show was short but fantastic. They came out and started with a song I didn’t know, but then they started to talk to the audience, which they did throughout the show. I loved it. They cracked jokes about how hot it was and how they were going to play a bunch of songs from their new album “The Else” and you’ll be disappointed because you won’t know them. They did play some of my favorites, Ana Ng, Birdhouse in Your Soul, Don’t Let’s Start and even Doctor Worm!!!!

The show was great but the company was better. I had such a good time with Pinoyboy, we have fun whenver we are together but we are both such TMBG fans that it just amplified it!

I wish we could just follow them around the eastern seaboard and see them over an over again!

I’m late as hell in blogging about my trip to Pittsburgh. A few of the posts are half written in draft mode. It’s a lovely Sunday morning here and I think I’ll try to get em done. Sorry for the deluge…
