Billie Jean King

Well that time of year has come again, it’s one of my favorites, that’s right it’s time for the US Open. Now it’s no secret I’m not much of a sports fan but I am a huge tennis fan and I love to watch all the events of the Grand Slam, but being an American, I do so love the US Open, the fact that I consider myself somewhat of a “honorary” New Yorker, the pride of watching the last slam of the year and the most attended sporting event in the world play out at the USTA National Tennis Center in nearby Flushing Meadows, NY is a bit overwhelming.

And last night during the opening of the US Open, it all became just a touch more overwhelming. Last nite, the USTA rededicated the USTA National Tennis Center as the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Billie Jean King is most likely the most important female athlete in the world. During her career, she fought tooth and nail for Equality for Women in sports. She won the “Battle of the Sexes” against Billy Riggs in 1973, this a year after she was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 1972. Oh and did I mention that she’s gay?

Congratulations to Billie Jean King for having such an amazing honor bestowed on her.

Oh yeah and Andre Agassi won the first match in his final US Open.

Go on... say something. You know you want to.
