sunday morning… …we woke early, too early for the total lack of sleep i had over the two nights prior but i was excited as hell to be going to see the color purple on broadway. we had a wonderful breakfast with steve and his hubby, cheesy eggs, bacon and lovely olive oil loaves. once again good conversation and good company. ![]() the broadway theater we headed into the city via path train and got to the theater about a half hour early. the was a huge crowd. huge. we found our seats which turned out to be excellent. first balcony second row, end seats! the show started with an amazing gospel number that really set the mood. the show was magnificent. the actors/actresses were fantastic. lachanze(celie) was very very good but, felicia p. fields (sophia) stole the show. she nailed sophia (my favorite character in both the book and the movie) and her voice is amazing. elisabeth withers-mendes (shug) who like felicia p. fields is a new comer to broadway did shug justice and her voice was bigger than life. i also liked brandon victor dixon (harpo). aside from being cute as a button, his voice was like butta! the story moved well and they made some great jumps across the story, leaving out some stuff from the movie, and putting in some stuff from the book. there were some hugely memorable songs from sophia’s hell no! to the duet between celie and shug what about love? and finally the title song the color purple. the soundtrack comes out in january 2006 and it’s high on my must have list. i would highly recommend getting tickets to this show asap. it officially opens this week (dec 1) and even if oprah’s name wasn’t on it, it’d still do phenomenally well. to be continued… |
